Shirley Chisholm Greeting Card
"If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair," the words of one of the most significant icons in US history.
Trailblazer Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman to be elected to Congress and the first Black candidate to seek a major party nomination for President.
In 1968, running for a seat in New York's 12th Congressional District with the campaign slogan "Unbought and Unbossed," Chisholm prevailed and held the seat for 15 years.
When she announced her 1972 run for President, Rep. Chisholm was asked why she would pursue such a seemingly futile goal. Her reason: "I'd like them to say that I was a Black woman in the 20th Century who dared to be herself. I want to be remembered as a catalyst for change in America." From Baton Rouge-based artist Kathryn Hunter's "Inspiring Women" series.
