Founded in 1915, St. Louis-based Wallace Pencil Company was a major manufacturer of pencils, by 1979 the company was selling 120 million pencils annually and was sold the next year. These very rare jumbo Apprentice pencils were produced in the 1950s with bonded lead -- graphite core is glued directly to the barrel -- for strength and durability.
